| As you know, my name's Alex Dale, and I'm
an economist. I live in the country, but I work in town. I get up very eariy on weekdays, have breakfast at half past seven, look through the morning papers and leave the house at eight. |
| I usually go to work in my car. On my way to town I stop
at the house of Alfred Ross, my friend and colleague. We work for the same company, and
always go to work together. Alfred gets into my car and I drive on. The
price of petrol's very high in this country, so we use our cars
in turn. That's very convenient, and helps us to save money. It usually takes us half an hour to get to the office, but if the traffic is very heavy, it takes us about an hour, and we always try to leave the house in good time so as not to be late for work. I'm not married yet, so I sometimes spend the weekends with Alfred and his family. The Rosses have got three children. Sammy and Nick go to school (Sammy's twelve years old, and Nick's fourteen). Their daughter Judy's twenty-one and she goes to college. She studies medicine at a medical school. Alfred's wife Nancy is a trained nurse, but she can't go out to work, because she's too busy about the house. Alfred's an excellent accountant, and he works hard. He earns enough money to keep such a large family, but it isn't easy, of course. "Life's full of problems!" he often says. I've got a problem too: Shall I get married? I've got a girtfriend. Her name's Deb Fennell. I'm sure you remember her. She's a lovely young gin, and I'm always happy to see her. |
