5.1. The other + существительное в ед.ч. означает другой (из двух):

1. The museum's at the other end of the road.	Музей находится на другом конце улицы.
2. We've got two nurses. Jane's busy now, but the other girl can help you.	У нас две медсестры. Джейн сейчас занята, но другая девушка может вам помочь.

The other + существительное во мн.ч. означает все другие, остальные:

1. They kept all the other copies last time.	В прошлый раз они оставили у себя все остальные экземпляры.
2. Miss Ellis came at eight. The other secretaries came at nine.	Мисс Элис пришла в восемь. Остальные секретари пришли в девять.

В этом значении перед other может также употребляться притяжательное местоимение.

5.2. Another + исчисл. существительное в ед.ч. означает другой (из многих предметов или лиц), иной, какой-нибудь еще. В этом значении местоимение other на письме сливается с неопределенным артиклем аn.

1. Let's go to another restaurant.	Давайте пойдем в другой ресторан.
2. That's quite another problem. (= That's quite a different problem.)	Это совсем другая проблема.
3. Let's leave it till another time (= till some other time).	Давайте оставим это до другого раза.

5.3. Подобно русскому слову другой the other и another могут употребляться без последующего существительного, если ясно, о чем идет речь.

1. There were two important letters in yesterday's mail. One was from Germany, the other was from France.	Во вчерашней почте было два важных письма. Одно из Германии, другое из Франции.
2. "I don't like this book." "Take another."	Мне не нравится эта книга. Возьми (какую-нибудь) другую.

В этом употреблении слово other имеет форму множественного числа — others другие, остальные.

1. Only John's away. The others are here. (The other students ...)	Отсутствует только Джон. Остальные здесь.
2. I don't like these tapes. Have you got any others? (...any other tapes?)	Мне не нравятся эти записи. У тебя есть какие-нибудь другие?
3. Where are all the others? ( ... all the other people?)	Где все остальные?

5.4. Слова other и another могут соответствовать русскому слову еще.

1. What other films did you see at the festival?	Какие еще фильмы вы посмотрели на фестивале?
(Cp. What else did you see?)	(Ср. Что еще вы посмотрели?)
2. Have you got any other ideas?	У вас есть еще какие-нибудь (какие-нибудь другие) соображения?
3. Any other questions?	Еще (какие-нибудь) вопросы?
4. Have another cup of coffee.	Возьмите еще чашечку кофе.
5. I waited another week.	Я прождал еще неделю.
6. I've got another three books to read.	У меня есть еще три книги для чтения.

Местоимения each other и one another являются синонимами и означают друг друга, друг другу и т.п.

We often write to each other.	Мы часто пишем друг другу.
They always wait for one another after classes.	Они всегда ждут друг друга после занятий.
