3. Слова few, little, a few, a little.

3.1. Слова few [:] и little соответствуют по значению русскому слову мало.

Few употребляется с исчисляемыми существительными, little — с неисчисляемыми: few = not many, little = not much.

В разговорной речи few и little чаще употребляются с усилительными словами so, too, very:

1. There were very few people at the exhibition. (= There weren't many people...) На выставке было очень мало народу.
2. "We've only received two faxes." "So few?" — Мы получили только два факса. — Так мало?
3. We have so little time left! У нас осталось так мало времени!
4. They had too little money to start their own business then. (= They didn't have enough money...) Тогда у них было слишком мало денег, чтобы начать собственное дело.
5. Few colleges have such libraries ['laibrsnz]. (= Not many colleges...) Немногие институты располагают такими библиотеками.
6. Little news could come quickly from a place so far away. (= Not much news...) Мало новостей могло быстро дойти из такого отдаленного места.

3.2. A few означает несколько, небольшое число и употребляется с исчисляемыми существительными.
A little означает немного, небольшое количество и употребляется с неисчислясмьши существительными.

1. They've gone to the country for a few days. Они уехали за город на несколько дней.
2. Let me say a few words about it. Разрешите мне сказать об этом несколько слов.
3. "How long have you been here?"
"A few months." 		—Сколько времени вы здесь находитесь?
— Несколько месяцев.
4. "Have you got many English books at home?"
"Not many, only a few." 		— У тебя дома много английских книг?
— Нет, только несколько.
5. We just need a little time to get all the documents ready. Нам только нужно немного времени, чтобы подготовить все документы.
6. "Would you like some salad?"
"Just a little, please."		 — Хотите салату?
— Только немного, пожалуйста.

 

Внимание!

Словосочетание quite a few означает немало, порядочно.
Сравните:

"Have you bought many models from that company?" "Yes, quite a few." —Вы купили много моделей у этой компании?
—Да, порядочно (довольно много).
"No, only a few." — Нет, только несколько (довольно мало).

1) К глаголу могут относиться только слова little и a little:

1. You read too little!
2. Could you wait a little, please? (= Could you wait a bit, please?)

2) A little также может относиться к прилагательным и наречиям:

1. That model's a little different. (= ...a bit different)
2. Could you call back a little later, please? (...= a bit later)
